Scaling the Heights in the Mile High City of Denver, Colorado

Dubbed the “mile high city” because of its elevation at 5,280 feet, Denver offers a fantastic mix of Wild West history and urban sophistication. Set along the front range of the spectacular Rocky Mountains, it also offers a full roster of unforgettable outdoor adventures for every season of the year.

If you’re looking for things to do, here’s a list of the most popular must-see Denver points of interest for first-time visitors.

Historical Attractions

Molly Brown House

Just minutes from downtown Denver, the Molly Brown House was once the mansion of Colorado’s favorite daughter, Margaret Brown, who became a worldwide celebrity when she took charge of one of the Titanic’s lifeboats and rowed the survivors to safety. Immortalized in the musical “The Unsinkable Molly Brown,” this indomitable heroine lived a rags-to-riches life that in many ways encapsulates Colorado’s rich mining history.

Wings Over the Rockies Air & Space Museum

One of Colorado’s most unique attractions is the Wings Over the Rockies Air & Space Museum, which houses more than four dozen historic aircraft and space vehicles. In addition, there’s a fascinating space and rocketry exhibit featuring spacecraft models and demonstrations of missile technology through the past century.

History Colorado Center

As one of the area’s premier historic venues, the History Colorado Center takes you on a trip back into Colorado’s colorful past, when it was a major hub of America’s Wild West and one of the nation’s most important mining centers. With interactive exhibits and priceless artifacts from Colorado’s mining history, this year-round attraction has something for everyone to enjoy.

Outdoor Attractions

Elitch Gardens Theme Park

One of Denver’s most popular summertime attractions is Elitch Gardens, a landmark amusement park that first opened to the public as a summer resort in 1890. Today, after a major relocation and millions of dollars in restorations, Elitch Gardens offers world-class rides and a fantastic water adventure park.

Lakeside Amusement Park

If you love the feel of a small-scale vintage amusement park, check out Lakeside Amusement Park, which has been operating at the same site since 1908. Fortunately for nostalgia buffs, Lakeside has retained many of the same iconic rides and attractions for decades, and it remains a favorite destination for thousands of devoted fans every season.

Traveling Up I-70

If you don’t think an expressway can be a tourist attraction, then you’ve never traveled up Denver’s famed Interstate 70. Lined with spectacular mountain views, I-70 leads you straight into the famed High Country region, which is set in the middle of the majestic Colorado Rockies. While locals love to travel up to the High Country to escape Denver’s summer heat, this area is especially popular during the winter months, when it produces record levels of some of the nation’s best powder for skiing.

The High Country offers a wealth of picturesque mountain towns such as Frisco and Georgetown (made famous by John Denver’s 1986 movie “The Christmas Gift,”), as well as world-renowned ski resorts such as BreckenridgeVail and Copper Mountain.

Buffalo Bill Museum

Just north of Denver and off 1-70, you’ll find one of Colorado’s most fascinating attractions, the Buffalo Bill Museum. Filled with artifacts from Buffalo Bill and his famous Wild West Show, which toured the world at the turn of the 20th century, the museum features props and costumes used by Annie Oakley, Buffalo Bill, Chief Sitting Bull, and other colorful members of the touring company. Just a few yards away from the museum, you’ll find Buffalo Bill’s grave, which lies on a mountaintop offering one of the region’s most beautiful vistas.

Throughout the year, Denver boasts a huge variety of indoor and outdoor attractions and events that are unique to the city. Whether you’re a history buff, an outdoor adventurer or a big city cosmopolite, you’ll be enchanted with Denver’s scenic beauty, mountain-town vibe and urban charm. Be sure to pin your adventures on this Earth Toned Colorado Travel Map when you return!
