Nuremberg Old Town may be Germany’s best kept secret. This is a medieval old town that is home to a 1000 year old castle as well as the famous Nürnberger bratwurst – but that is not all there is to experience in this little corner of the earth. Below are some things you should consider doing when visiting Nuremberg Old Town.

Take a Guided Tour

Night view of NurnbergThere is so much to see in Nuremberg. It is a gorgeous town to visit, but since there is so much to see and do, you may be overwhelmed. Consider taking a guided tour – especially if you are visiting on limited time. Guided tours are a fantastic way to maximize your time as guides know where all the sights you want to see are located and can also give you the background of each location rather quickly.

Consider the 2-Hour Tour through the Historical Old Town, which takes you to all of the best sights, including the Nuremberg Castle, the Hauptmarkt and Albrecht Dürer’s House.

Where to Stay

The best place to stay in Nuremberg is between the train station (bahnhof) and the Old Town, keeping you near all of the sights as well as public transport and the main restaurants. Sorat Hotel Saxx Nuremberg is a luxurious hotel, located in the city centre at the main Market Square.

Food to try

Traditional German bratwursts and beerYou must try the famous Nuremberg sausage while visiting – it is outstanding. Another delicious local dish to try is the Franconian Schäuferle, also known as pork shoulder. Head to the Goldenes Posthorn or Spiessgeselle for some fantastic food. Grab the best bratwurst in town at Bratwursthäusle.

See the Historic City Walls

aerial Nuremberg, GermanyMany of the old city walls (which date back to the 14th and 15th centuries) are still preserved in Nuremberg. These walls stretch for nearly 5 kilometers and there are walking paths that follow these walls, taking you to cool towers and gates that can be explored. The best stretch of walls are located on the west side of town, between Sittlertor and what was formerly Maxtor.

Visit the Imperial Castle

Imperial Castle in NurembergThe Imperial Castle located in Nuremberg Old Town is full of history and colorful houses and buildings. The Nuremberg Castle climbs high above the Old Town and also includes the deep well and the Sinwell Tower, each of which are worth a visit.

The Albrecht Dürer house is also located nearby, which is a museum today. Dürer was a famous painter who was known for being one of the first artists to do a self-portrait.

Check out the National Germanic Museum

The National Germanic Museum (Germanisches Nationalmuseum) houses the country’s most vast collection of all things related to German art and culture. See over 1.3 million fascinating items relating to the cultural and artistic history of the region here.

While visiting the museum, you are close enough to 'The Way of Human Rights', a street-long monument that is dedicated to world peace. This is a fantastic piece of work worth visiting and contemplating.
