Travel insurance is often regarded as an essential component of any travel undertaken internationally, whether it's a short trip to the Bahamas for a long weekend or a working holiday in Asia. However, many people don't know exactly what travel insurance is or how it works. This article aims to change that.

Travel insurance is basically a safety net which is there to protect you from the risks of things that can go unexpectedly wrong while you travel. Travel insurance can cover a variety of events from lost luggage, canceled/delayed flights, and serious medical emergencies.

Like many other types of insurance, there are specific provisions and benefits which you can be entitled to depending on the type of claim you need to make.

Travel necessities Even with travel insurance, it's important that you as a traveler educate yourself about the risks of travel to the area that you're going to. The types of benefits vary from provider to provider, and making sure you have the right type of coverage before you leave will save you massive headaches and costs down the line. Another essential component of travel insurance is assistance. This can range from guidance and information to a wrap-around service offering evacuations in case of medical emergencies and the like.

Finally, there are different types of coverage options when it comes to the length of travel insurance. If you are a frequent traveler and are looking to make multiple trips in a year, then considering taking out an annual travel insurance package could save you in the long run, rather than taking out a separate policy for each trip.

Plane wingMake sure to shop around and browse what different insurance providers can offer. Also, make sure to read the fine print, particularly where it pertains to what aspects the travel insurance doesn't cover. Exclusions can be just as important (if not more so) than the coverage benefits. Conversely, if you are going on a "one-off" trip or don't travel often, then a bespoke travel insurance policy can be more cost-effective.

Once you have a travel insurance plan in place, you will have that peace of mind that if anything does happen during your travels, you will be protected.
