Excited for your upcoming vacation but dreading the long flight it takes to get to your destination? We get it, we've been there! Don't stress my fellow travelers, we've put together a list of the top 10 long haul flight tips.
1. Get a good nights sleep beforehand
I know what you're thinking - why would I want to be well rested if I'm planning on sleeping the whole flight? The answer is simple. If for any reason you are unable to sleep the whole way through the long flight, you won't be as exhausted or irritable when you land. Whether it's because you chose the unlucky seat with a child kicking you in the back constantly or because you just couldn't fall asleep, you'll at least be well rested from the night before.
2. Pack snacks - but don't stuff your face
Packing snacks is essential, but overeating on a flight can make for an even longer-feeling and uncomfortable flight. Choose the right snacks when deciding what to bring. For example, stock up on some carb-rich foods that will help you cope better with jet lag. Or in general, try eating warmer foods rather than cold foods because they are easier to digest.
3. Wear comfortable clothing in layers
You never know if you will be hot or cold on an airplane. In fact, you will probably fluctuate throughout the flight. Therefore, you'd rather be safe than sorry on a long flight and being able to add or take away layers will definitely ensure you are comfortable for the entire journey.
4. Get a neck pillow
I know, this seems like a no brainer, but to be totally honest I had never brought one until my recent trip to California. After my flight was over, I couldn't believe what a difference it made! Whether it's to try and help you sleep or just to give your head and neck more support while sitting for so many hours, it's definitely worth the investment to pick one up.
5. Charge & stock up on all your devices
Make sure you have plenty of movies, TV shows, books, magazines, games, or anything else that you like to do in your free time pre-downloaded on your phone or tablet. There's nothing worse than getting up in the air expecting to use WiFi and for some reason it doesn't work and you are left twiddling your thumbs for hours bored out of your mind! And don't forget to charge everything fully before leaving home. I never travel without my portable battery charger pack which gives my devices extra juice when there are no power outlets in site.
6. Do some in-seat exercises
Sitting through a long flight can make you restless and uncomfortable. Try helping yourself by doing some in-seat exercises throughout the flight. For example, rolling your shoulders, lifting your legs up slightly off the floor and rotating your feet around and pointing your toes towards you as far as you can and holding it there for a few seconds.
7. Bring the flight attendants a sweet treat
The flight attendants are there for your safety and to help with whatever you need on your flight. Doing something nice like bringing them some chocolate or cookies will definitely make their day (and bring you some good karma). Who knows, it may even help get you some extra perks or preferential treatment!
8. Bring antibacterial wipes or hand sanitizer
Although planes are a great way to get somewhere quickly, they are extremely germy. Between the tray tables, the seat belts, and the air vent above you blowing recycled air all over the cabin, you should try your best to protect yourself from getting sick after the flight by using wipes and sanitizer to keep your hands and seat area clean.
9. Stay hydrated
This can't be emphasized enough! It's easy to get dehydrated when flying because of the lack of humidity in the air. Therefore, it's important to stay hydrated while on a long flight by packing enough water or always asking for some when a flight attendant comes by.
