Berlin has a rich history, which dates back to events including the swinging 20s, the two world wars and the Cold War, as well as much more. It is the largest city in the European Union, next to London. Plus it is quite affordable compared to other large European cities. This one is for the history buffs. Here are some of the top historical sites and attractions to see in Berlin, Germany.


Reichstag

Reichstag, BerlinHome to the German parliament, the Reichstag building is one of the most popular German sites to visit. Back in 1933, it was burned and was a trigger for the consolidation of Nazi power. Today you can enter the building for free. You just need to register before you go to book a visit and don’t forget to bring identification. Be sure to head up to the glass dome on top to get a phenomenal view of all of Berlin. It is quite a treat to see the city just before close so you can set your eyes on Berlin at night time!






 

Brandenburg Gate Memorial

This city that is rich in history has many reminders of the Nazi era crimes, from brass-lated stones in sidewalks as well as monuments to memorialize the lost. Near Brandenburg Gate is a Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe. It is comprised of 2711 rectangular blocks that drop deeper when you walk further into the memorial. Below the memorial is an information center where you can learn more about the Holocaust. You can get in with free admission almost every day.

Checkpoint Charlie

Checkpoint Charlie,BerlinCheckpoint Charlie is a popular border crossing that joins East and West Berlin. This attraction is featured in numerous films, including Bridge of Spies. The Wall Museum at Checkpoint Charlie is full of information on the Berlin Wall and is worth taking some time to check out as well.











The Berlin Wall

Berlin WallThere are remnants across the city of the Berlin Wall, which separated East Berlin from West Berlin. For the most information on the structure, head to the Berlin Wall Memorial, where a visitor center is located in addition to a remaining portion of the wall. You can also head to the East Side Gallery, along the Spree River, which is another popular site to see a graffiti-covered remnant of the Berlin Wall.






Museum Island

Head to Museum Island, in the middle of Berlin, to check out some fantastic museums, including the Altes Museum to see a collection of Greek antiquities, the Neues Museum to set your eyes on Egyptian treasures as well as the famous bust of Queen Nefertiti, and the Pergamon Museum, where you can see historical buildings, including Ishtar Gate of Babylon.
