Many tourists are drawn to visit the Dominican Republic for its attractive tourism infrastructure as well as luxury resorts and gorgeous beaches. The geography in this area is extremely diverse, ranging from semi-desert areas to lush forests and giant mountains, offering travelers many options – especially those who want more than just another beach vacation.

Beach resorts located in La Romana, Punta Cana and Puerto Plata are attractive to many vacationers because each offers a tropical escape combined with a relaxing atmosphere. Travelers who want to do more than just relax often head toward the more remote areas of the Dominican Republic like the mountains or towns and cities that are less populated with tourists. Cabarete is a fantastic place for kiteboarders and surfers, while Santo Domingo is a wonderful colonial place to visit for those interested in history. Below are more of the top rated places and attractions to visit on your next trip to the Dominican Republic.

Punta Cana Resort Destination

Resort in Punta CanaNo list of places to see in the Dominican Republic is complete without the resort destination, Punta Cana, on it. The shimmering emerald waters of the Caribbean meet a seemingly-endless stretch of gorgeous white sand beaches here, with all-inclusive luxury resorts, perfect for families or couples. Here you can take part in heaps of entertaining water sport activities, including parasailing, swimming and riding tour boat. Don’t miss out on the amazing cuisine at high end restaurants here – not all of which are expensive.

Las Galeras

Sunset in Las GalerasLocated along the tip of the Samana Peninsula, the small town of Las Galeras resides. This is a remote location, perfect for independent travelers hoping to catch a vacation off the beaten path. Check out beaches like Playa Fronton or Playa Rincon as well as other undeveloped beaches for an experience unlike any major resort destinations in the Dominican Republic. The town only has one main street, but has many restaurants, as well as a number of places to grab some grub in the surrounding mountains or along oceanfront cliffs at affordable pricing.

Mountains of the Dominican Republic Jarabacoa is sort of an outdoor adventure playground located in the interior mountains of the Dominican Republic. The climate is milder here than the coastal areas with cooler nights, thanks to an elevation of over 1600 feet. If you plan to spend more than a week in the DR, consider making your way to Jarabacoa to explore while hiking, rafting, biking or setting foot on trails.

La Romana

La Romana Near Punta Cana, La Romana is another resort destination in the Dominican, albeit lesser known. The area is filled with large resorts with beautiful beaches. Some of the resorts appeal to independent travelers who hope to self-cater. Be sure to visit the Altos de Chavon so you can shop for souvenirs and crafters in a replica 16th century artisan-style village. Also venture over to Bayahibe, a nearby fishing town to look around and grab a boat to Isla Saona.
